What are Distribution updates?

> So what is a Distribution update?

 

I have to issue an  'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' for the OS to install newer kernels and certain updates for the current release. Otherwise those updates are help back. 

 

I believe you have to run 'do-release-upgrade' to install a newer version of Ubuntu.
