I've had considerable luck converting older laptops, for my children and
grandchildren, from Windows to Ubuntu. 13.04 and 13.10 are both easy to
install and have excellent hardware support. LibreOffice has worked well
as a Microsoft Office replacement and GIMP works well as a Photoshop
replacement. The improvement in performance is also impressive.
It's amazing how much speed sapping clutter exists in older versions of
Windows (Windows 7 & 8 are much more efficient). I recently upgraded the
offices of a local church from Windows XP to Ubuntu. Their machines were
not up to running the latest versions of Windows. They were impressed with
the improved performance and quite happy with Gnome (Unity was too much of
a leap).
