QEMU: question on creating a virtual/emulated(?) machine without KVM

Use VirtualBox. It is designed for this sort of thing and is much better at it.

KVM is for server virtualisation, QEMU is a development/simulation tool.

You have a log to cut and a choice of a wood saw, a sharp vegetable
knife and a steak knife. Don't waste your time and ours fooling around
with the kitchen tools; use the right tool for the job.

Virtualbox works on 32-bit and 64-bit hosts, on Windows, Linux and Mac
OS hosts, and does not require hardware virtualisation.
