I'm not sure about that. I built the Big Board, and it first ran at
2MHz The mod was to put in a Z80 and change the clock to make it run at
4MHz. I'm pretty sure the Xerox version was the same. (Or maybe it
started with a Z80, I don't remember, but I do remember upgrading to
4MHz.)

I used the built-in keyboard and video circuitry, and I had to modify
the video circuit to get more bandwidth--it blurred the letters on the
screen until I did that. I wrote it up for the magazine, and got a
tee-shirt for my troubles!
