As you surmise, the fact that it says that the user is authorized
suggests that it is not an authentication issue.  Can you post the
whole of lightdm.log please.  Also ~/.xsession-errors (check the
date/time on that to check that it is from the current attempted
login, in fact also check the date/time on lightdm.log).
