Cheesy? For what it's worth here's my definition!

Each of the manufacturers I have tried ARE NOT always compatible with
linux even when claimed. So one has to look carefully at the model and
research. I think HP have gone down in quality... back in 1998 I
bought a HP Deskjet printer that had either a black or single colour
cartridge - I just stuck to black and refilled two each about 20 times
(a good printer!). I had a PSC500 which was great BUT plain expensive
on cartridges. Most printers can be bought for the price of one
cartridge.

My choice is having separate printer and scanner. My Samsung 2010
which I have had for a few years installs on ubuntu plug & play. Also
excellent for refilling - along with Oki a simple 1-2-3 exercise. Once
one has found a printer that works in linux the next important issue
is refill capability. One is considering a medium term investment imo.
