Re Win8: I'm surprised that you couldn't get VPN to work but not THAT
surprised given the weird interface.
Re Unity: I disagree. It's almost as easy and friction-less to use as
OS X. My main complaint, which applies to Gnome Shell too, is that you
have to mess around in dconf-editor (or gsettings if you know the key
names) in order customize some aspects of the interface.
Re your laptop: You're welcome. If it's working, there's no point in
re-formatting and re-installing anything.
