Well, while this old lucid install is running the mangler, anything it 
might want to do is foiled with the chattr +i applied to the files, and has 
been since in mid 2011 when I installed Lucid LTS on this box.

So its been emasculated & castrated here.  I would sincerely like to see it 
nuked from the distro's choice of networking tools, chased off the property 
and told not to return ever until it can recognize a working network and 
leave it the hell alone.

And thats my final $0.02, but adjust for inflation since 1934.

WiCD does seem to work better, and I believe that is what's on my laptop, a 
Mint 14 install IIRC. That even works with the friggin radio when I can 
make dd-wrt's dhcp-server work.  But since thats spotty, its hardcoded in 
the hosts files now too.
