13.10 upgrade

I'm running the 64-bit Ubuntu 13.04 Desktop that I've augmented with
software from distributions other than the default ones, although
nothing has been compiled. This evening, much to my surprise, there was
a big box message asking me if I wanted to upgrade to Ubuntu 13.10. (No
one from Ubuntu had actually paid that much attention to me before. I
said "ask me later.") In the past, I have always done clean installs, if
only for the opportunities these offer me, as a busy user, to review
what's actually going on with my system and to actually apply my backups
on a wide scale. But this message makes me curious. How reliable is the
Ubuntu upgrade? Do people actually use it? Is there something special
about this one, other than the "nudge"?
