For future reference if someone says that they installed from the
Ubuntu repository that would normally mean the standard repositories.
If installing from a ppa one would normally say that it is installed
from a ppa.
I have installed from the ppa and JAVA_HOME is not set, so wherever it
is getting set it is not from the java install.
If you log in as a different user (or guest) do you still see it set?
If so then it is set system wide (are you absolutely certain it is not
set in /etc/environment?). If not set for a different user then it is
being set by something in the users environment.
How is the search for the text JAVA_HOME on the whole disc going? It
should be nearly done by now I would have thought.
