Stopping automounter

My system has a lot of partitions, and they change from time to time.
Those times are stressful partly because of the effort to shut up the
automounter and let me go about my business without my partitions
being mounted, windows popping up, and so on.

I've been editing /etc/fstab furiously to this end, putting in
"noauto". Surely there's a better way that lets me just stop this
activity, hopefully temporarily.

Any clues?
