Thanks.  That's a likely kind of explanation.  However, snd-usb-hiface
gives 'not found' when I try to modprobe it, and I couldn't find it either
on my system or in the Ubuntu Package Search.  I'm using 3.2.0-54-generic
with 12.04 LTS

I can find references to the module for (e.g.) RPM systems, but not
Ubuntu.  It seems Ubuntu doesn't do a very good job with harware drivers.
Maybe I'll have to find a better distro.
