I always installed Ubuntu and Fedora using the default setup with LVM 
and have never had a problem. I have not partitioned for about 8 years.
Unless there is a need to use a second particular  partition for a 
different installation then don't, LVM works well.
If you have data to be saved, save it before hand and do a fresh install 
using defaults then drag the saved data in as needed.
