Excessive memory consumption by lightdm-gtk-greeter (Intel graphics controller, 13.04)

Well, it definitely looks like lightdm-gtk-greeter is the memory hog, but I
can't see why. Checking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and
/var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.

I tried using the webkit greeter, but it's too buggy to be useable. Any
other suggestions for how to diagnose or fix this?
