move and resize partitions

When I first installed Ubuntu I did not choose the best partition sizes. Now I
need to resize them which will require at least moving one partition. There is
another system installed and dual booted.
I first tried to backup the current partitions. I got a message "Temp space
has 11960320 available, backup needs approx 68157440." The temp space seems to
be what is free on /home. I could not find a way to change where backup
acquires its temp space.
I installed gparted and the "resize/move" menu option is not active. I assume
this is because I am booted from the partition I want to move. So I am looking
for suggestions on how to resize and move these partitions. I have a partition
for / and /home along with a swap. My preference is to backup everything and
if neccessary do a restore, I do not want to reinstall.
