Recording analog video (with USB frame grabber device)

Thanks for your replies.
xawtv shows both the video and sound, *but* the video is too small and has
vertical stripes in it.
mplayer works including deinterlacing, but I just can't f* find out how to
make it play the audio.
vlc sometimes shows the video with the vertical stripes like xawtv,
sometimes it shows it correctly (I think after mplayer ran before starting
vlc), sometimes it shows nothing at all.
cheese shows the video but hangs when trying to record.
I've also tried a lot of other programs and mplayer is *the only one* that
plays the video consistently and can do deinterlacing. Just no sound. This
is starting to drive me crazy.
kdenlive has a configuration setting for video input, but I just can't find
any button or anything to actually start recording or showing the input.
(And the help that I can find in google just shows the preferences screen.)
Someone must already have done this? With this or a similar USB based
device? I just can't find any blog or forum or mailing list entry about it
(or then it's one of the various progams above that just don't work). I'm
going to write to the mplayer mailing list to get help with the sound, and
might end up writing a wrapper around mplayer myself to make it usable for
my buddy who is not technical. I just hope that there's any usable video
editor after the fact (I don't think I'll manage to write a video editor as
well).
Christian.
