Not sure exactly what you are after, but if you cp -raf .thunderbird/ to 
a backup and then copy it exactly back, ~before you re-run thunderbird~, 
you should be restored and back up, with passwords and accounts intact. 
If everything is in one huge backup file, I'm guessing that something 
like Midnight Commander or Archive Manager could extract that entire 
folder for you.  Ric
