So, you inherited old dot-config files too. There is that. But, if I am
not mistaken, it was around then that xorg.conf got killed off.
Here's my suggestion, as I have had to fool with nvidea for many moons.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/202677/nvidia-driver-doesnt-work-in-12-10/202680#202680
Print this out, as you might find yourself in the Twilight Zone between
installing the correct driver and having it generate a new xorg.conf
file so it can correctly run, to wind up in a text mode login screen
when/if the xserver fails dramatically.
Ensure that the linux-headers-XXX and linux-restricted-modules-XXX
packages are ~~pre-installed~~, where XXX matches the version of the
kernel you are using. Otherwise you'll be stuck like Chuck trying to
apt-get install with the correct repo-file-name when you're in text
mode. Been there, done that. You should be good to go. Set depth = 16
to spare the grey hair, sluggishness and possibly the artifacts. Read
the remarks, too. Good Luck man! I wish you success. Ric
