no luck with flash with either firefox or chrome

Its not the browsers per se, its your installation is fubar. Somehow some
incompatibilities have gotten introduced, which might be difficult to undo.
FF and Google Chrome work without problems for me (for a very long time ...
FF since probably 8.04).  Is this a new installation that you can start
over with, easily? Or, can you uninstall all the stuff that was installed
that was not packaged explicitly for Ubuntu (ie a .deb) to where you can
start with a clean slate?
