no luck with flash with either firefox or chrome

Hi,

I have installed "Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS" and then firefox, using apt-get.  Unfortunately, I can't watch youtube - I just get a black box where the film should be.

Then I got a clever idea of trying chrome.  Now instead of a block box, I get a box with a puzzle piece in it, and the msg "Couldn't load plugin".  I've googled extensively, found lots of advice which fit my case perfectly - but not change.

This can't be difficult, can it?  I mean, youtube on ubuntu?
