This might be an old problem that's been mentioned before. There's an
old Toshiba Satellite here with an SD slot that never worked for me.

OTOH I have a Toshiba NB520 type netbook also with an SD card slot. With
the NB520 the card slot "Just Works" no issues.

Just a thought - the requirements for SD and SDHC cards are different.
Have you tried your netbook with for example a 1GB SD card?

Only other thing I can suggest is getting a USB SD card reader from
ebay. For less than 3 quid including postage I got one that works with
SD/SDHC/microSD/microSDHC.
