I have got Diane's system working again. Re-installing the OS after
restoring /home did most of the work.

evolution: by moving pieces of the backup into .evolution I got back	
	everything but the contact list, which wasn't very big.
	future- use evolution backup and restore to create an archive.

firefox: I copied .mozilla to /home/diane I got back her settings.
	future- we are now using mozilla's sync to store her settings.

f-spot: Colin's reply made me take a close look at /home/user and
	hidden files. Lurking in .config is f-spot, and that is
	where f-spot keeps its information. When I restored that 
	folder f-spot was able to match tags to photos. It did take
	a while though.
	future- I hope I will remember what I did and won't have to
	go through this again.
