What is MATE window manager in Linux Mint?

I don't understand the question.

Maté is a fork of GNOME 2. It's a desktop, like GNOME Shell or Unity,
but one that looks and works just like the old GNOME 2 of Ubuntu
before 11.04 and Mint before Mint 12.
