You *may* find that MATE works, which is an effort to keep maintaining
Gnome 2. I'm not aware of any major distribution supporting it, but
they do have instructions for installing it on recent Ubuntu and
Debians:

Have you tried it on something Gnome 3 based (like Unity)?
