Ah, I see.

Well, in that case, the simplest answer would seem to be to physically
rearrange laptop and monitor.

As with my own experience with 12.10, in which the nVidia driver no
longer allows you to enter a screen resolution - you must pick from
the list it has autodetected.

I use CRTs from preference: 2 × 21" Dell Trinitrons. One was connected
via a BNC cable. This does not carry EDID data from screen to graphics
card, so the driver /can't/ detect any screen modes.

Some research & asking around indicated that there was no way around
this, so I had to go and get another VGA-VGA cable and replace my
VGA-BNC cable, with concomitant slight degradation in picture quality.

That's progress for you.
