Ubuntu 12.04 hanging very frequently

FWIW, I've no clue if this is the same duck, but kmail in 10.04 LTS is
suffering greatly since about a week or so back. Hit any reply, and it may
be 2 or 3 minutes before the composer opens, you can pop over to a
different workspace screen, like to htop, and the system is not doing a
thing. But just switching workspaces seems to generate enough of an IRQ
storm that kmail finally gets to execute. Once the composer window is
open. then everything is back to normal, till the next time you click one
of the reply buttons. I rebooted last night, and the lag is now only 20
seconds or so, but something has definitely gone aglay in one of the
updates recently.
