Indeed there is no such option. I suppose it isn't even related to NFS 
and I would possibly see a similar delay, if I had a slow USB stick 
mounted (e.g. via USB 1.0). Maybe it is a "feature" of one of the 
libraries used by firefox which is more a side effect than intentional 
behaviour. At least avidemux-gtk has the same behaviour. I don't know 
about other applications because I don't use too many gtk-applications 
(I prefer KDE).

It doesn't matter if the share is unmounted or if there is no traffic on 
the link - in both cases firefox starts with the normal speed.
