Well, LILO had the problem, but it's because (AIUI)  LILO perforce had
to run in real mode and in real mode you access the hard disk through
the BIOS (INT 11h, I think) -- and the BIOS couldn't access above h16
s63 c1024, something like that - equivalent to 511MB.

Then LBA addressing came in, but at first, it didn't work right and
had a separate limit - I think something like the equivalent of h255
s255 c1024. That meant nothing above 8GB.

Then they fixed LBA and it all went away.

But this stuff was a /long/ time ago. Now, it just gets in the way and
gives no benefit.
