Poor battery backups in Ubuntu?

Hi!

We, a group of 3 FOSS enthusiasts, started using Ubuntu on our laptops. The
only complaint is with the battery life.

Me               -  just replaced my battery; will have to observe for a
few days (Wait!! Is this replacement a side-effect of Ubuntu??)

Friend 1&2 - In Windows 6 hrs
                   Ubuntu   3.5 hrs

Why do many posts over the Internet too complain this way?

Is it true that 'Ubuntu damages your battery/ not as good as Windows in
this matter' ?
