ping -- unknown host

Just curious why the ping doesn't work:

thufir at dur:~$ 
thufir at dur:~$ ping

I've been able to ping in the past.  Is there some form of DNS 
lookup on my system which is causing that?

The primary dns is:
backups dns:

I'm connected via a universal wireless adapter of this type:‎

from which those dns entries are acquired, I assume, from the router.
