12.04.2 LTS, new install, network broken

Well, I don't have NM or resolvconf installed on this 12.04 machine 
which has a manual network configuration. But I think you may be right 
because I had this setup already many years and it may have survived the 
upgrade to 12.04. At least it would be necessary to create a file 
/etc/resolv.conf with the appropriate contents after uninstalling 
resolvconf.
