Install crashes at hardware scan, Dell Inspiron.

I've tried several things.   Booting up with LTS, I can get a shell with 
alt-ctrl-f2.   How can I step through to diagnose exactly what hardware 
crashes the installation?

I've tried 12.10, 12.04, 11.x and Fedora and they all crash and 
tracedump at hardware scan in installation.  The tracedump takes over 
the screen and I can't scroll to see exactly what the issue is.

Any ideas?

I'm using a thumbdrive install now hoping that because it's not read 
only I can do something to step through the install.
