upgrade hangs while mid of the upgrade process

First make sure you have anything important backed up.  Then try
sudo apt-get install -f

if that runs without error then
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Note that is dist-upgrade not do-release-upgrade.  Let us know what happens.
