Can you confirm that this is a normal ubuntu 12.04 with the default

Not sure what you are asking.
I have 12.04 installed on a separate HD and my GRUB loader asks which system
to load.

When you start in Recovery mode do you get the same graphic logon
screen as in normal mode, but it then then accepts the password?

No, I am working in terminal mode. It never goes to graphic.
