ruby, rvm and packages

Much as I appreciate the work of RVM, it just seems overkill to compile
Ruby. I've already installed with RVM, so it's a done deal.
I'm just curious, because I see, after the fact:
ruby1.9.1 (>= 1.9.3.194-1)
http://packages.ubuntu.com/quantal/ruby
which I think would've be sufficient for purposes. Is it reasonable to
use the package manager for any ruby development, or will that just lead
to headache down the road?
In the meta-sense, couldn't an Ubuntu developer script RVM and make the
binaries available via the package manager? Thus obviating the need for
me to compile ruby on my old crappy hardware :)
thanks,
Thufir
