David's idea is right. However, for the time being,
can you boot a live ububtu (or any live version of linux)?
If yuo can, then use that to
sudo fsck -y

and when fsck is done, reboot (be sure to eject the live CD after shutdown)
and before rebooting.
But please, get a high quality, and high capacity UPS ASAP!!
