    I'll explain with command line interface. You can start a second thunderbird
  with:

thunderbird -no-remote -P

  and create a new profile. I'll name it "second". Afterwards you can run

thunderbird -no-remote -P default
thunderbird -no-remote -P second

  and have both running together.
