virtual box .deb file conflicts with installed one

Can you elaborate? I'm curious what config files would be handled 
different if you upgrade and not first uninstall the old version and 
then install the new version. IIRC, that is what synaptic does when 
there is a new VB version available in the virtualbox repo and I select 
it for installation.
