Both with GNOME3 and (as I said) with a virgin 12.04 install.

If you are using 12,04, then that at least says it's not 12.04. On the
other hand, the fact that it crashes on a virgin 12.04 install suggests
it *is* 12.04.

No crash dialogue - just an immediate exit, the exact instant I click on
(say) the "Notes" tab (or select view -> Notes).

Sigh.
