LibreOffice3 Impress crashing?

For no apparent reason, LibreOffice3 Impress now crashes when I try to
select any view except "Normal" view. When I say "crash" I mean instant
immediate exit. It didn't last week; it does now. I can't find any
reference to this particular problem in google - does anyone here have a
clue what might be causing it? Note that this happens on a new, empty
presentation as well, so it's not the particular presentation that is
causing the problem.

Things that don't help include:
 - rebooting the computer
 - selecting a different JVM
 - selecting NO JVM
 - saving to a different name, and loading the new file
 - saving to another format such as PPT and loading that
 - opening a presentation on a virgin 32-bit 12.04 Ubuntu

That last makes we wonder if it ever worked on 12.04 -it's a while since
I used Impress.

Everything works, just I cannot select any other view (such as Notes).

I'd rather not upgrade to LO4 or crossgrade to OO...
