I don't know if it /is/ a result of such a limitation; it just seems a
plausible reason.

If you don't think so, then I  suggest you go learn a little bit about
portable software development, because all you are doing at the moment
is exhibiting your ignorance.

For instance, you could start by researching why Thunderbird doesn't
support the Maildir storage format for your mailboxes.
