Trying a different video card didn't help, so I assumed my nvidia driver 
wasn't causing a problem... When the nvidia drivers were completely 
removed, I can use the ubuntuforums site.

thanks to those who responded, and thanks to those making me aware i was 
sending in html/colors; it certainly wasn't intentional, sorry.
