What version are you running.

On 12.04 using the webup8 ppa my java (Oracle) version is:

$ java -version
java version "1.7.0_45"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_45-b18)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.45-b08, mixed mode)

I don't know about Chrome, but java is disabled by default on Firefox 
and you must now grant permission for java apps to run.
