Preseeding answer to grub installation disk

The "also" looks like what I use but I haven't done a preseeded
install for a while so maybe something's changed.

Add "DEBCONF_DEBUG=5" to the kernel cmdline and, when your install
stalls, switch to vt4 to find out which preseed variable is needed.
