Scanner (Canon n1240u) fails with "invalid parameter"

I've hit that problem bfore, but it doesn't fix this one.  I'm in the
scanner group and I still get "Invalid argument."

Given that this failed between two scans with nothing else changing,
I'm beginning to suspect a hardware failure.  Lovely.
