Eternal monitor won't connect Ubuntu 13

I am just connecting one external monitor.  This works fine on this Asus 
1025 on 12.04.  It was working on 13 for about two weeks and then an 
update did it in.  Starting with 1210 you can not choose 2d.  I doubt if 
in 13.04 you can install another desktop.
