Automatic GRUB selection

I've noticed that if Ubuntu has a problem booting and I have to reboot in
the middle (or it reboots itself), the second boot requires a manual
selection and does not automatically select the default option.  Is there a
way to make it always choose the default option, or at least try a couple
times before requiring manual intervention?
