I don't know what the current status of the nouveau open source driver
is, or what kinds of performance you should expect from it. However,
traditionally, Nvidia cards really need the proprietary driver from
Nvidia to work well.
Somwhere in the Lubuntu menu should be the 'Additional Drivers"
application that will scan your system for hardware that needs 3rd party
drivers and offer to install them for you. Try that, and have it
install any Nvidia drivers it suggests.
