Authoring tool lyx is missing document classes

I've never used lyx, but it looks like it is supported - at least
mailing list is active:
<http://www.lyx.org/MailingLists>

No, it's been abandoned since 2006. Try texlive instead.

You'll find almost every latex class in the ubuntu repository (package
texlive-full is the complete distribution).
