Boot options

Thanks you put me on the right track.  I ran sudo 
update-grub and it showed both versions so I knew they were 
both still bootable but it still didn't give me a menu at 
boot. So now that I knew grub was still the boot loader I 
searched and found the solution.   I had to change 
/etc/default/grub by uncommenting out the low video display line
GRUB_GFXMODE=640x480
